My new favorite book blogger - Lori over at Get in the Game alerted me to the organization Daddy's Hero's - an organization dedicated to bringing families together through the stories of baseball and sports- how COOL is that - well or so I thought, until I went over and saw their newest book - "The '86 Mets, Buckner and the Bambino" - as most Red Sox fans will remember, that day/video of Billy Buckner will live on in history forever- every time I see it (and who hasn't seen it, it is on EVERY World Series highlight clip show EVER produced since 1986!) I cringe just a little (the same could be said for the Bucky "effin" Dent homer too).
In all seriousness, I think this is a great idea for an organization and look forward to checking out some of their titles - now if they could just write one about the 2004 World Series, then I might be happy!

Take me Out to the Ball Game!
If you have read my blog for any length of time, you know I am a baseball fan -ok ,well, I am a RED SOX fan, but also a baseball mom (both my boys play... ALOT of baseball), a baseball book fan and recently I became a fan of our new minor league team, the Gwinnett Braves (whose stadium happens to be around the corner from my school!)
Well I recently heard about a few programs that combine baseball and reading - what could be better, I ask??
Kevin Youklis, first baseman of the Boston red Sox (YOUK!) has teamed up with New England Mobile Book fairs to offer a reading incentive program as part of his charity, Kevin Youklis Hits for Kids, called Youk's Kids Reading group. You can sign up on the website and every member gets a $5 gift certificate on their birthday to spend at New England Mobile Book fairs. There is also an essay contest, which you could win lunch with Kevin (how COOL!!). Thanks to Terry at Reading Tub for the link.
Speaking of Red Sox'a players - if you live in Massachusetts your kids can get into summer reading by participating in the Mass. Teachers Association's Red Sox Reading Game. The spokesperson for this program is none other than Sox catcher, Jason Varitek, who just happens to live not far from me (hello, Jason, wouldn't you like to come read to some enthusiastic baseball fans during the off season... we're not far from your house.... give me a call...ok). The program is run through Massachusetts schools, and the cool thing is, winners can take their teacher to a Red Sox game - my aunt went with one of her students last year and she said it was a BLAST!
Now closer to home in Georgia, I saw in an article in our local paper that the Gwinnett braves will be donating tickets to students who participate in the library reading program, I have not seen anything about this on the Gwinnett Braves website, but will keep looking.
Lots of other major and minor league teams have reading incentive programs over the summer, check out the teams website to see what your favorite team is up to this summer.
If you are looking for some new baseball themed books, check out this list of new books from Kids Reads - even though there is a book about the Yankees included, there are some great new books I can't wait to check out this summer!

Happenings in Beantown
I am in Boston for spring break this week (I know, most people go south for some sun, I just like to be different!) and the big story here this week - one of the ducklings from the statue saluting the classic book Make Way for Ducklings was found missing on Monday. It was the second lead story (after the Red Sox rainout) on the evening news - these people like their ducklings!
But all is better in beantown, the duckling was found yesterday, leaning against a street sign - I am guessing frat prank (and if my husbands fraternity was not now defunk, I would blame the RDO boys from Emerson!)
As a total coincidence - I was planning on using that book for my next storytime - I love the story and for me, growing up around Boston, I love to share the area with my students, many of whom will never make it up this way.
Off to my first Red Sox game tomorrow to celebrate my oldest son's 13th birthday (YIKES, I am now a mom of a teenager!) but first I get to go see author Matt Tavares - author of one of my oldest son's favorite picture books - Zachary's Ball - he happens to be doing an author visit at my aunts school - how cool is that!

Back!
I'm back from vacation - and BOY it just makes me wish that the 26 days left of school go by QUICKLY! I love my job, but I also enjoy sleeping and that is what makes summer and vacations so glorious - no alarm going off at 5:30 am!
We had a great time in Boston, even if the Red Sox LOST both games we went to, my father told me I am not allowed to go to any more games this season!
I took the kids on the Freedom Trail and I took lots of pictures and filmed some parts of the trail, I am hoping to make it into a virtual field trip since our 4th graders study the Revolutionary War. I am also thinking of doing some sort of web quest to go along with it - I think this will be my summer project. This summer when we are in Massachusetts I am hoping to get to Lexington & Concord and get some video shot.
I also have to say, Jen Robinson was right, I did LOVE the Steve Kluger book My Most Excellent Year - I think I would have loved it even if it wasn't set in Boston and mentioned the Red Sox on every other page!
The other book I picked up last week was not kid-lit but chick-lit - Jennifer Weiners' new book Certain Girls - and who shows up in her book - none other than Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems (the main character is reading it to her daughter) how cool is that!
Don't forget that today is TAX day - ugh is all I have to say about that!!!

Look what came in the mail today!
yes, tickets to the FIRST Red Sox- Yankee game this season! We are also going to the game on April 9th (my son's 12th birthday) but the only seats we could get on that day are standing room only! Could be a little COLD for us southerners, but I am sure we will survive!On a related note, my son's baseball season was suppose to start today but was postponed due to SNOW - yes SNOW (although now as I type this, the sun is out and while COLD, there is no snow on the ground!)

GO SOX!
what a game last night - Manny pulling it out with a homer in the 9th inning to win. The team is up 2 games, one more win and they win the series.
And of course, who can't be just a little happy that the Yankees lost last night and are 2 games in the hole in their series.
Baseball in October, another reason why October is my favorite month of the year!!
Watching the game on TBS last night, all the promo's featured a song and pictures of my man, Jon Bon Jovi - ahh - could life get any better???

Exciting week- nothing to do with Kid Lit at all!
It has been a big summer week here. 1st my boys from New Jersey came out with a new album (Lost Highway) and were on the Today show on Tuesday - now I just have to wait until they tour this winter!
My hometown boys, the Boston Red Sox were in my adopted hometown of Atlanta this week. We had tickets, but the only one that got to go was my oldest son (see next item for why we couldn't make it) and although the boys from beantown gave one to the Braves on Monday, they got them on Tuesday and Wednesday - WTG SOX! And by the way, we are still in 1st place, can't get too excited yet, it is only June, but hey, being in first right now is a nice place to be.
And the best thing to happen this week has been my youngest son. He is 6 and playing on the all star baseball team for our park. His team is now 10-0! They won their first tournament on Saturday (trophy and everything) and we are now playing in the district tournament. Of course since they keep winning, they keep playing, which is wreaking havoc on our home life, since we have to be at the ballpark every night, but it has been a lot of FUN (although we will all be happy this weekend when it will all be OVER for the season!) Here is the link to their picture on our parks website - pretty exciting stuff for a 6 year old!

Red Sox, Bon Jovi OH MY!
Although most of my posts on this blog are about library stuff and children's lit, I do have to acknowledge some of my other passions here, well because, it' s my blog :)
Jen, from Jen Robinson's Book page reminded me that I haven't posted about another passion in my life - baseball - or more specifically, the Boston Red Sox, as of this moment, 12 days, 18 hours and 12 minutes until opening day - woohoo! Of course baseball season also means crazy scheduling in my house, I have 2 baseball players and baseball in the south, while professional loyalty is something almost unheard of (although Atlanta Braves fans for years have been telling me their PAIN of being a Braves fan - ah, lets just say Bucky F'ing Dent - Bill Buckner anyone? Don't talk to a Red Sox fan about PAIN) youth baseball in the south is an intense thing, even for my youngest son at the age of 6 - we have baseball practice almost every night of the week for one of my boys and games during the week and almost every Saturday. If I didn't love the game so much, I'm not sure I could survive youth baseball!
Another passion of mine - Jon Bon Jovi - ok, this has to do with the group Bon Jovi, but ah, lets just have a mental image of the man for a moment... ok that was nice --- they released a single today from their new album, Lost Highway, which won't be available until JUNE! You can hear the single(You Want) To Make a Memory here, but I can't seem to find it ANYWHERE to download - on a side note, I do LOVE their new song, but I have heard they won't be touring for this album - bummer, their live shows are AWESOME, brings me back to high school and big hair and the 80's (ok, I could do without the reminders of big hair!)
OK, I promise, back to regularly scheduled Library Stew tomorrow!

Pop Culture and Sports
Well, although I do want this blog to reflect my life as a media specialist, I did say that I would HAVE to post about some other fun things once in awhile.
Well the 49th annual Grammy Awards were last night and my man, Jon Bon Jovi won for best country collaboration (CONGRATS BON JOVI) and some great strong women, Mary J. Blige and The Dixie Chicks won BIG last night. I am not a country music fan, but I do like *some* of the Dixie Chick's songs and I was especially happy about their wins last night because of the controversy that has surrounded them in recent years. In a connection to the media center, maybe with the Grammy's happening this past week, highlight some musician biographies or music books in your library (see, there can ALWYS be a connection to POP culture in the library!)
In sports news - BASEBALL SPRING TRAINING STARTS THIS WEEK - woohoo! The Red Sox start reporting this week, with their first practice on Friday. Hopefully we can make the playoffs this year, last fall was a disappointment with us not even making the playoffs, but as a life-long Red Sox fan, it isn't as if we aren't used to disappointing season ending games. My sons' also start their baseball season next week, it just kills me that at the ages of 6 & almost 11 that they will be braving cold temps. to practice 4x a week, and this is suppose to be FUN - handling a metal bat in 40 degree weather is not FUN to me, but I guess to the boys it is, they can't wait to get back out on the field - brrrr!
I am getting some work done at home today since I have a sick child, I just hope that my other 2 don't come down with whatever my oldest has.
